Tips for Fabulous Family Photos – by Jen DelCastillo

January 17th, 2014 by | Share Blog

Jen DelCastillo 5th Avenue Digital Photographer 5th Avenue Digital photographer Jen DelCastillo is our resident expert on family photography.  Now that she has a child of her own, she’s become even more adept at getting the most from family photo sessions. We’ve asked Jen to convey some of her wisdom to us non-experts.

I’ve been photographing families for over 14 years now and I often ask myself: what makes a really great family shoot?
With my family shoots I always bring a lot of excellent lighting, along with my techniques, my creativity and an attitude of compromise.  With these tools, I create a relaxed and comfortable environment where people can have a fun experience getting a cherished photo with their family.
Whether your kids are babies, toddlers, teens or adults, one element always rings true: self-expression. When you enable family members to get involved, have choices and express themselves it allows comfort, which helps make kids of all ages feel relaxed, allowing you to capture the most natural and beloved images.

Prince William and George Break Family Photography Traditions – Why Did They Do That? And What Should You Do That They Didn’t?

August 21st, 2013 by | Share Blog

Prince William The shots heard round the world this week were clicked by Kate Middleton’s dad, casually snapping his baby grandson in the backyard.  Once again breaking tradition, the royal couple has designated this family snapshot as the first official photo of Prince George.

With this symbolic act, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge sent a message: they’re making their own decisions, family photography being one.  They will go on as they’ve begun, incorporating traditions while resisting being caged by them.

Prince George’s true official family photography session will occur at his christening, so they’re not straying too far from tradition.  Perhaps their act of mild defiance is their way of communicating, “We’re just like you.”  While we applaud that, they’re also demonstrating an utter lack of awareness about what makes a good family photo.  Allow us to enlighten you, so you can have family photos that are even better than the Duke and Duchess’.

July 26th, 2013 by | Share Blog

Take a look at these photos and see if you can tell where they were taken: In the country?  In a suburban park?

It’s a logical conclusion, but incorrect.  These shots were actually taken on the Highline, right in the heart of Manhattan and close to the 5th Avenue Digital studio.  Admittedly, this is a bit of a trick. Other shots from this family photo shoot make the actual location more obvious. (more…)

May 31st, 2013 by | Share Blog

Great Father's Day GiftA picture is a snap shot of time and when it is printed it becomes a memento. When was the last time you had a picture worth printing?

Obsessed with capturing every moment we drown in hundreds of unfocused pictures—pictures that often exclude us as we get stuck behind our camera phones.

Family Photography By 5th Avenue DigitalToday a picture is as good as the Instagram filter you choose, or the likes and comments it receives on Facebook. Beneath all the effects, shares and likes, does a photograph still hold value?
