Step-and-Repeat Photography with Onsite Prints: Inside or Out?

August 24th, 2017 by | Share Blog

Here’s how to decide whether to do your Step-and-Repeat photography with onsite prints outside or in

At 5th Avenue Digital, we’re often asked by clients, in the warmer months, if they can position their Step-and-Repeat photography station outside, especially when they’re also getting onsite prints. The short answer is: YES!

Taking advantage of an outdoor environment really enhances Step-and-Repeat photos, especially when doing onsite prints. A natural outdoor setting gives the Step-and-Repeat photos and onsite prints a feeling of immediacy and seasonal color. But there are a few challenges and considerations involved.

Lighting – The most crucial consideration for Step-and-Repeat photos done outdoors is to assess the lighting situation at the time Step-and-Repeat photography will be done. If the Step-and-Repeat location is in the daytime shade, supplemental lighting is needed.  If happening in the evening, we need to adjust the lighting as the sun sets.

Angle of the sun – When considering lighting for outdoor event photography, it’s important to know the sun’s position during the event. The 5th Avenue Digital tech team will calculate the angle of the sun at the time and location of the photography, and recommend the proper position for the Step-and-Repeat photo station, to avoid shadows across people’s faces.

Electricity Access – Onsite print equipment needs juice. We often will bring a generator when doing onsite prints, which is more reliable than batteries.

Wind – Backdrops can become sails in the wind. When shooting outdoors, it’s best to forgo a backdrop with stands and let the environment serve as the Step-and-Repeat photo background. (And that’s the whole point of photographing outdoors, anyway, right?) For outdoor Step-and-Repeat photography that requires a backdrop, we bring sandbags to anchor it.

It takes years of experience doing event photography in outdoor environments to fully know and avoid the possible pitfalls. When you work with 5th Avenue Digital, all these concerns are taken care of for you. All you have to do is smile!

10 Pearls of Wisdom from CEO Bootcamp by American Express

September 30th, 2013 by | Share Blog

Tory-Burch-Foundation CEO Bootcamp I am always excited when I get invited to an event where there is true learning and the ability to be inspired by not only the people speaking at the conference but also inspired by the people attending the conference.  American Express Open held its first ever CEO Boot Camp for Women last Friday, to assist and inspire women entrepreneurs.  Here are a few pearls of wisdom from the day.

1.Only 2% of women who own businesses gross over $1 million in the united states and most are just over $100,000.  This number always surprises me when I hear it  Ladies! this is where there is room for improvement!

2. There are three pillars of success that Amex believes are important for woman entrepreneurs to focus on: Confidence, Competence and Connections.  The day was filled with inspiring stories from Tory Burch of Tory Burch Foundation, Angie Hicks of Angie’s List and Robin Chase, creator of Zip Car.  Each of these ladies gave lessons they learned on their journey and how they applied these pillars to their own businesses.

3. Luck is where preparation meets opportunity.  This came from Robin Chase from Zip Car.  Be really clear what’s working and what’s not. Learning about organization for your business is a secret weapon.

4. Build companies that will want to make your customers send you love letters — also from Robin Chase.

5. There is a fine line between crazy people and entrepreneurs — Janet Krause from Harvard Business School (more…)

10 Things I Learned at This Year’s Women Presidents’ Organization Conference

May 10th, 2013 by | Share Blog

Elizabeth Beskin and participants at the 2013 WPO Conference

Here are some of the kernels I took away from my participation in the Women Presidents’ Organization 2013 International Conference:

1. Women are starting to understand the power they have in numbers. They are mentoring each other, empowering each other, and creating businesses that are making a difference in their communities and in the lives of other women.

2. I am lucky to have heard Linda Applegate a few times as the head of the OPM program at Harvard Business School. Every time I hear her lecture, even if I’ve heard the content before, I hear something new. This time, I heard the term pivotal growth, and I think that’s the stage we are now in at 5th Avenue Digital. (more…)

The Social Media Portal Sweetens a Promotion for Hershey’s S’mores

At the recent BlogHer Conference at the New York Hilton, Hershey’s was looking for a way to draw attendees to their promotional suite for their eternally-popular S’mores treats.  They accomplished this by creating fantastic interactive sets, with the help of the top-notch team at Empire Force Events , masters at the art of event marketing.

The Hershey’s Suite gave everyone a chance to make – and EAT! – S’mores while relaxing in the created settings.  One set was a campfire, the other a backyard barbeque.  After getting their photos taken, everyone used our Social Media Portal to email the pictures to friends and family, Tweet them and post them on Facebook.  This created lots of buzz and drew more visitors to the S’mores Suite.  It’s another example of event marketing done right.  The client was thrilled with the results and the photos are – of course – SWEET!

Highlights from Special Event

February 8th, 2011 by | Share Blog

5th_avenue_digital_at_TSEThe appeal of Special Event, the annual gathering of movers and shakers in the special event industry, has something to do with going someplace warm every year during the first few weeks of January.  I usually find an inspiring mix of event ideas from the trade show, educational elements and massive doses of networking.  This year’s event was in Phoenix, and though the weather was warmer than home, I didn’t see the sky except for my walk across the street from hotel to convention center.

I got off to a rocky start when my plane from New York was canceled because of frozen lines.  The day was not lost because my fabulous traveling companions, Xocital Gonzalas and Howard Givner, not only quickly rebooked us on a later flight, but kept the conversation engaging and prevented a true travel nightmare. Fifth Avenue Digital Covers the Israel Policy Forum (IPF)

January 6th, 2009 by | Share Blog

chuck-hagel-ipfWe recently covered an annual event for the Israel Policy Forum (IPF), held at The Grand Hyatt. This year’s event featured a keynote address by Senator Chuck Hagel (R-NE) and discussions with leading analysts and officials on the Israeli-Palestinian negotiations.

The event featured discussions with leading analysts and officials on the Israeli-Palestinian negotiations, the indirect Israeli-Syrian talks and the role of the Obama administration in the Mideast. The IPF advocates for active and sustained American diplomatic efforts, which are essential to achieving a comprehensive settlement of the Arab-Israeli conflict.

We applaud their work and are proud to have participated in this important event.
