The Mansion at Natirar: A Wedding Photographer’s Dream Location

December 12th, 2012 by | Share Blog

mansion at natirarOur photographers were thrilled to finally shoot a wedding at The Mansion at Natirar, the place in Far Hills, NJ that Richard Branson bought as an event space.  The most obvious advantage The Mansion has over any other location we have seen is the killer views during the ceremony.

Formerly owned by the King of Morocco, The Mansion is an historic estate that has been transformed into a luxury Banquet and Catering venue, in partnership with Restaurant Associates.  Their attention to period details and modern accommodations makes The Mansion a distinctive location for weddings – and for wedding photography.  The exceptional creative powers at By Robin, the wedding planners, made full use of the space, giving this couple and their families a wedding experience that truly expressed their individuality, complete with a drum solo by the groom.

Real Wedding: Katherine and Sam at 24 5th Avenue

October 10th, 2012 by | Share Blog

BJ enright for 5th avenue digital  Katherine and Sam managed to have a down home wedding here in NYC.  They got married in their backyard,  literally.  She lives in the building where 24 fifth is located.  She wore her moms wedding dress which is more unusual these days with a city wedding.    Taking a look at the images, you can tell they have country feel even in the middle of the big city.

The photos express the down-to-earth nature of the couple, and capture  a wedding that had a very simple and elegant feel.   Everything, from getting ready to the her mom’s dress expresses the simplicity.    The couple was very appreciative of everything on their wedding day as well as being  very focused on the spirituality of their ceremony.bj enright for 5th avenue digital

One of our more recent additions to our photography team,  BJ Enright shot the event.  He found the couple very easy going, loving, fun and full of joy.    What more can a photographer ask for.  For more images from Katherine and Sam’s wedding check out the Link

Wednesday Wedding Wisdom: Tips for Making Your Shot List

July 25th, 2012 by | Share Blog

wedding photojournalism - 5th avenue social Preparing a shot list for your wedding day? Keep in mind that a top photographer already knows to capture all the tried-and-true key moments, family members, candids, and personal details for you and works best when given the creative freedom to do his or her best job.  However, if there are any not-so-typical shots you’d like to have, it’s a good idea to meet with your photographer to discuss them. Here are a few ideas to get you started:

  • Your college roommates
  • Dad and his four sisters
  • You and your babysitter
  • Mom and her tennis buddies

Be sure to point out anything unusual that the photographer might not expect. If there are divorces in the bridal party, or members with disabilities or special needs, you’ll want to be conscientious in apprising your photographer so that shots can be scheduled with this in mind.

Discussing your personal shot list with your photographer is a guaranteed way of not missing a single beautiful moment of your wedding day.

Wedding Wednesday Wisdom with Photographer Jesse Anders

July 18th, 2012 by | Share Blog

wedding photographyYou may recall Jesse Anders’s beautiful work for the Marks-Aruti wedding at Bridgewaters featured a few weeks ago.  Jesse makes it all seem effortless, but it takes great skill to deliver such natural and uncontrived photographs.  The hook for Jesse is connecting what’s seen with what’s felt: the ecstatic moment in the middle of a dance, with friends whirling round the bride and groom –caught! Picking out the Louboutin soles with the selective b&w shot in Central Park…very cheeky, and perfect.  Jesse talks a bit about his unique style and why he absolutely loves being a part of the happiest moments of his client’s lives.

What is the chief characteristic of a memorable photo?

For me, a photograph is most memorable when it captures a moment in time that is emotional and powerful to begin with. To be able to hold that moment in your hand as a photograph is nothing short of amazing!  As a photographer, it is important to me that I am not forcing a photograph into existence. Yes, a “beautiful” photo can be constructed, but a truly memorable photograph comes from a truly memorable moment. Read the rest of this entry »

Wedding Wednesday Wisdom with Amanda Allen of NewlyWish

June 20th, 2012 by | Share Blog

Wedding Registry ServiceWant to know where to find chic wedding gifts that break out of the traditional mold?  Amanda Allen can tell you exactly where to find to them—because it took planning her own wedding to ferret out the eclectic mix of stores and service providers she was looking for. NewlyWish is the child of Amanda’s and Robard Williams’s experience and their desire to create an online registry where others could easily find and share ideas and gifts from the sophisticated to the hip, and from place settings to artwork and fitness training sessions. We love that Amanda’s registry also features eco-friendly gift ideas. Amanda talks about trends in the wedding registry and what inspires her work.

What are the top trends in registry for 2012?

Of all parts of the wedding planning process, registry is the one that best lends itself to being done online from start to finish, so I think we’ll be seeing even greater use of existing online technologies and platforms as well as the development of new ones to help make the registry creation process simpler and even more attuned to couples’ needs.  One technological “advance” that we’ve seen over the past few of years is the growth of cash registries. Going forward, though, I think couples are going to increasingly focus on products and services for their registries (guests can always give cash or a check in card), drawing on improvements in ecommerce, generally, and registry-specific developments that allow couples to quickly reduce the world of available products down to just those that they want. Wedding Wednesday Wisdom with Shawn Rabideau

June 13th, 2012 by | Share Blog

Talk about a turn of events!  This week’s featured expert was on his way to a career in journalism, when he decided it wasn’t for him.  During a short stint as a merchandiser at Pottery Barn, Shawn Rabideau found he had a knack for table decor and room design.  Soon, his talents were recognized and he jumped at an offer to do just that, full-time, in an event planning role.  It developed into such a passion that in 2004, Shawn decided to strike out on his own, founding New York-based Shawn Rabideau Events & Design, a full-service event production, floral design and lifestyle company.  With a long list of celebrity, corporate and charitable clients, Shawn’s had such success that he is considered one of today’s leaders in the event planning industry.  We couldn’t wait to wrangle a few precious minutes to sit down and chat about his experiences!

How has the industry changed since you started?

The internet, reality television and the economy have changed the industry.  There is more competition than there was before, brides believe what they see on TV and they are spending less and planning more on their futures than they are on the occasion.  I think we have to work a bit harder than we did a few years ago.  But I think it’s also super-rewarding! Wedding Wednesday Wisdom with JoAnn Gregoli

June 6th, 2012 by | Share Blog

5th avenue digital wedding wednesday wisdomThe accomplished wedding planner is a special breed, requiring a creative eye, stamina for the long haul, and the ability to remain calm during a crisis.  JoAnn Gregoli is a perfect example.  She started her event company, Elegant Occasions, in 1985, organizing dinners for Governor Thomas Kean and fundraisers like the one to build Liberty State Park Science Center.  Her business has evolved over the past 25 years, with Elegant Occasions now focusing mainly on planning weddings that reflect each client’s particular style, taste and personality.  She offers her insights in this week’s Wedding Wisdom.

What event that you either attended or planned has had the greatest influence on your career?

The greatest influence in my career, was Rupert Murdochs daughter’s wedding at his Beverly Hills estate. It was a surreal experience that took me from a simple Jersey Girl to someone to someone who now travels and plans weddings all over the world.

Wedding Wednesday Wisdom: Pretty Paper Talk with Jessica Paulen-Glick

May 16th, 2012 by | Share Blog

It’s a family affair at Judy Paulen Designs, where Jessica, under the tutelage of her mother Judy, helms the firm’s first retail boutique.  Located inside of Bloomingdale’s in New York City, the shop offers custom invitations and a broad selection of stationery designs for discerning brides, engaged couples, and party hosts.  Jessica’s personable style and natural creative knack have helped propel the nearly 40-year-old business into the 21st century, as they continue to work with some of the most beautiful, prestigious venues for their distinctively elegant clientele.  Jessica spoke with us briefly about how the industry has evolved and what inspires her work.

What’s a “can’t miss” event in your industry?

The National Stationery Show… and it’s coming right up!  It is THE place to see what’s new and what the next trends will be.  I always leave there feeling so inspired, trying to figure out which idea to focus on and make happen.  It’s also so much fun to see all of our friends from around the country.  I am counting down the days!

How has the industry changed since you started?

I grew up in this industry (my mother used to have her office in our house). Eight years ago I officially joined the family business that my mother built.  Since then the stationery industry has become so much more exciting. [Back then] a bride had to dig pretty deep to find an invitation that was unlike any other she had seen before.  Today there are so many wonderful options and styles available to her and it’s a joy to be able to offer such a great selection to our customers.  I give so much credit to our designers for bringing high design and intricate printing and production processes to the retail environment where any bride can access it and afford it.

Wedding Wednesday Wisdom with Bernadette Coveney Smith

May 9th, 2012 by | Share Blog

Although it’s still a hot-button topic in many debates, same sex marriage is currently legal in six U.S. states, and also Washington, DC. LGBT weddings and commitment ceremonies  are on the rise and have created a boon in the event planning industry.  Our Wedding Wednesday Wisdom today comes from a pioneer in the field: Bernadette Coveney Smith founded 14 Stories, a wedding planning agency whose mission is to ensure that all LGBT couples have the most positive, supportive experience while planning their wedding. Her firm is committed to producing gorgeous, meaningful and fabulous legal weddings with a holistic approach which guarantees that couples also receive resources to build and protect their family. Bernadette shares some of her industry insights with us.

Where did the idea for your business come from?

I am in the business of planning weddings for same-sex couples and started my company eight years ago, when the law changed in Massachusetts to allow same-sex marriage.  I was living in Boston and saw an opportunity to run a business and be an advocate for LGBT couples planning weddings in a very traditional, bride-focused industry.

In your experience, what’s often the most forgotten element of wedding planning?

Hands down, the guest experience.  It’s not just about decorating a room, but it’s tightly controlling the experience that happens there.  If guests are waiting too long for a cocktail, they remember that much more than what the centerpieces looked like. Read the rest of this entry »
